Goodbye 2015 Hello 2016: A year in Review

January 5, 2016 Kayla Miller

2015 will always be remembered as a special year for Plum Pretty Decor and Design. 2015 is the year it all began!

I introduced Plum Pretty Decor and Design a short 18 weeks ago. The idea to start my own business was something I had dreamed of since I was a child. However, in 2012 I graduated from college and was on my way to attend Occupation Therapy School. After interning my life away for 1.5 years I quickly realized this is not me. This was not what I wanted to be doing 5, 10, or 25 years down the road.

So I let the idea that I wanted to be an OT happily pass on by. This decision may have been one of the best I have ever made. Then panic mode hit. I'm 23 years old and I do not have a career!

Now lets fast forward past a part time job, interior design school, countless hours of planning, and many self pep talks telling myself "Kayla, you can do this," to August 2015 when I first launched my small business.

I first introduced Plum Pretty Decor and Design in August of 2015 and launched my website and blog September 1st, 2015.

I started Plum Pretty Decor and Design as an interior design and home decor business that specializes in creating beautiful spaces that inspire others to live meaningful, purposeful, love-centered lives. I also planned "pop-up shops" and antiques shows throughout North Carolina, Tennessee  and other surrounding states. Allowing people to shop my vintage and antique collections I normally would not have for sale on my website. I also started blogging about interior design, home decor, diy projects and all the little things in between.

In 2015 I fell in love with "Pop-up" shops. Being able to travel all over collecting items I love, creating custom painted furniture, and by doing this I am able to give others the opportunity to shop my creative style- and this is truly amazing. I sell a variety of items- but I focus on vintage and antique finds, custom painted furniture, farm tables, and items that fit a simple and fresh design palette. I love that through my collection and pieces I inspire others.

A highlight at the Liberty Antiques Festival (my first show ever) was when a lady from Atlanta, GA came to my booth and purchased a bunch of my antique white china plates and platters. She bought them because she had seen my blog post on my DIY Plate Wall and wanted to create one of her own in her home. This was a surreal moment for me- someone two states away had been reading my blog and I had inspired her to recreate my design.

After this show I began booking interior design consultations followed by actual design projects. People had seen my style and they loved it!

Then about a month later Plum Pretty was a vendor at City Farmhouse's Holiday Pop-up Fair where Sheryl Crow purchased a couple of my custom pieces. Yes! I said Sheryl Crow... City Farmhouse's show was eye opening. I remember telling my husband I was traveling 8.5 hrs away to set up for a 2.5 day show and feeling so scared I could have thrown up. There are a ton of expenses associated with shows, especially one that far and this being my second show ever I had no idea what to expect.  This show was a huge success and all the positive feed back I received gave me the confidence that I needed to continue "Pop-up shops" and make them a part of Plum Pretty's business.

The five months that Plum Pretty Decor and Design had in 2015 was wonderful but 2016 is going to be even better!

In 2016 expect to see a lot more from Plum Pretty in all aspects of my business. More designing, more blogging, and more shows.

As of January 1st 2016 I am a full time interior designer for Plum Pretty Decor and Design!

2016 is a new year and a new chapter for Plum Pretty- plans for 2016 include:

  • Rebranding and redesigning my website
  • 6+ Pop-up Shows (Dates and details coming soon!)
  • Weekly blogging
  • More DIYs
  • More design coverage
  • Getting my online shop live
  • More traveling
  • Attending more conferences for design
  • and much, much more

I can not wait to see what 2016 has in store for me and I am so thankful 2015 was so wonderful! Thank you to each and every one of y'all that make this dream a job! Follow Plum Pretty as we accomplish our plans and make 2016 the best year yet!

With love,
