Finding nightstands for our master bedroom has not been an easy task. Hours of searching the internet..... and nothing. I had a vision of what I wanted in my mind but actually finding the perfect nightstand I designed in my mind was not happening. I wanted nightstands with a drawer and cabinet bottom but with antique flare.
Salvage Sisters a local once a month warehouse sale posted a picture of items for their March Show. That is when I saw it, exactly what I had pictured- and I had to have it. Below is the picture where it was first spotted.
Fast forward past the craze of the show to this cutie sitting in my garage. I couldn't wait to paint this piece so I started on it first thing the next morning.
First I stripped the paint off the top using Jasco Premium Paint & Epoxy Remover.
Waited 15 mins then scraped away the paint. It took about three coats before most of the paint came off. Chemical gloves and safety glasses are a MUST when using this product. I know I don't have them on in the above picture but it was taken for photo purposes only and I couldn't touch my phone with the chemical gloves on. This stuff is strong and will give you chemical burns if it touches your skin!
Next I sanded down the top leaving small traces of white paint behind for a nicely distressed look. I also sanded down the remaining painted surfaces prepping it for paint. I did not want my milk paint to chip and I did not have any bonding agent so sanding the surface allowed the paint to adhere without chipping.
I painted the pieces using Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in the color Typewriter. This is the same color I painted the mantel for our master bedroom remodel. Read about Milk Paint and the process here.
After I painted the piece I lightly sanded it and applied Annie Sloan's Clear Wax the same way I did on the mantel. I replaced the hardware with new antique glass knobs and also cut a hole in the cabinet area so I could run my computer and phone cords through.
So glad I was finally able to get what was visioned in my head into our master bedroom- which is coming along nicely. I will post the other nightstand makeover soon but for now enjoy the pics of this finished "frenchy nightstand."
With love,
