So I'm pretty sure more than just my husband has noticed my obsession with jute rugs. I have one in almost every room in my house. I love the natural color, I love the texture, I love the durability, and I absolutely love the cost.
COLOR- My house is very neutral. I have neutral furniture, neutral walls, and dark hardwood floors. And my jute rugs soften the transition from my dark hardwood floor to my furniture. Matching very well with my french country/ farmhouse style house. They are a natural fiber rug and the color reminds me of a wheat field right before its time to harvest. The mixture of light and dark beige gives a warm earth tone to your room. The neutral color blends effortlessly with almost any color and style.
TEXTURE- The texture these rugs give is amazing. Their woven design is a fresh change from more traditional low pile carpet like rugs. And they feel quite comfy under your feet. Layering these rugs with other types of rugs is another great way to and texture.
DURABILITY- I've had two of my jute rugs for almost 2 years now and they still look great. Many of you may already know but I have a Great Dane and she loves to track in mud and dirt. She also loves to scratch and paw at my rugs. So after 2 years of mud, dirt, and pawing the rugs still look great. Every once in a while she will paw at the rug and a "string??" will come unwoven and I simply just tuck it back into the woven pattern. My mother-in-law's dog actually chewed a hole in one rug and I was able to repair it by tying the strands back together and tucking them back in, and you can't even notice where I "repaired" it. So I rank jute rugs pretty high in durability. And pet approved!
CLEANING- I simply just sweep or vacuum the rug ever so often. They are really good at hiding dirt! Meaning I don't have to clean them that often. The only "accident" we have had on a rug is Bella threw up on one of them. I simple wiped it up and cleaned it with water and a Mrs. Meyers cleaner. After it dried it didn't leave a spot or anything. So pretty easy to clean. But if a pet was to go potty on one that may be a different story. Luckily I haven't had that happen. I could see how that would be really difficult to clean. I have heard some say you can take them outside and hose them off and let dry. But I have personally never tried that. YET.. Hope I never have to!
COST- Don't get me wrong their are some expensive jute rugs out there, but for the most part they are super cheap. I got my 9x12 rug in my living room for less than $250. If you have ever shopped for rugs you know how great of a deal that is. I pretty much furnished my entire house with rugs for what one Pottery Barn rug cost.
Now for what I don't love so much.... The shedding and ENDLESS dirt it produces. Jute rugs are made from natural fibers and these fibers end up all over everything. This is extremely noticeable on my dark hardwood floors. Lift one of these babies up and it literally looks like I haven't cleaned in 10 years. No matter how much you vacuum these rugs, they still leave a layer of dust on your floors underneath them. So I would say I definitely have a love hate relationship with them... They're so pretty but so dirty.
So if you can get past having to sweap up the fibers daily, not looking underneath them, and praying a guest doesn't tip over the edge exposing the layer of dirt underneath, making it literally look like you have been sweeping dirt under the rug for years, then you might too love jute rugs for their beauty. Oh and your socks. Your socks will get covered in the fibers too.
Well now that I have scared you all from ever even thinking about getting a jute rug I am going to tell you this- do it! All the beauty and looks of a jute rug outweighs the negative. Plus it motivates you to sweep and vacuum more.
