My Spooky Ivy & Skeleton Front Porch I Created with JOANN
Fun fact you probably don’t know about me… I LOVE HALLOWEEN. If it was socially acceptable to live in a haunted house, I would- Addams Family style. So this Halloween season I’ve teamed up with JOANN to decorate and “Spooky-ify” my tiny front porch. Who knew JOANN had such an amazing selection of Halloween decorating items?!
If you’re a frequent flyer here at Plum Pretty you know I mostly keep it pretty neutral. So as I was planning my Halloween front porch decor I knew I wanted to keep it somewhere along those lines. You CAN do spooky Halloween decor with a neutral palette. Yes, a lot of Halloween decor is colorful, glittery, bold, and dark. But that doesn’t mean yours has to be. You just need to be a little creative to get the spooky neutral feel. Now I’m going to tell you all about how I created my “spooky ivy and skeleton” neutral Halloween front porch. And don’t worry I will link all the products so you can easily recreate this look with products from JOANN.
The base of my design is ivy. Ivy is usually a more spring/summer choice of foliage. But not when you’re making “spooky ivy.” I wanted the appearance of an old overgrown house covered in vines. Because aren’t all haunted houses overgrown with vines? Well at least in my mind they are. And to keep the spooky ivy (and my budget) contained I focused only on the inset area of my tiny front porch. I draped it around the door and placed sprigs of it here and there trying to mimic the way ivy intertwines itself along the nooks and crannies of a house. Then I “spooky-ifed” it by adding faux spider webs, little skeleton spiders, and skeleton bats. I also mingled in some tattered creepy cream cloth above the door. And some flying bats that I hung with clear twine. And just like that you have “spooky ivy.”
I used small little tacks to place the ivy and spiders where needed. You could also use double sided tape if you didn’t want to make holes. I placed one spider right near the handle of the front door. Making it where guests are sure to see him when they come to ring the door bell. It definitely gives me the creepy crawlies.
I continued the “spooky ivy” onto the door with this wreath from JOANN. This wreath already had the ivy, vine looking things, and green mossy twine. The only thing I had to add was the faux spider webs and the skeleton spiders. I attached the spiders with floral wire. Creating the perfect instant “spooky ivy” wreath. You might also notice the little mice silhouettes on the stairs. I will get to those here in just a minute.
Now let’s talk about these skeletons. Skeletons are a great way to add a whole lot of “spooky” while staying neutral. After all they are just bones and bones are creamy white. I love the texture and fun they add to the porch. Let me introduce the Miller bone family. If you haven’t noticed this is our family in the skeleton form. I mean how awesome are these giant dog skeletons. They are literally almost the same size as Bella and Charlotte (who are Great Danes). JOANN has a huge variety of skeletons making it super easy to create you own bone family.
Charlotte still hasn’t quite figured the skeletons out. She isn’t scared of them but very curious. I catch her sitting beside them and staring a lot. Maybe she isn’t too fond of this new family. To fill in and really complete the design I added a moon phases wooden sign next to the door, some black metal jack-o-lanterns along the steps, black spider tea light holders, pumpkins, and a Halloween door mat. I could not pass up this door mat! Because we totally “Creep it real” around here. I layered it over a stripped tassel rug to add texture and dimension.
I also added some vinyl bats to my garage door to carry the spookiness across the front of the house. I create these the same way I did the mice going up my staircase. See I didn’t forget to tell you about them. I used my Cameo Silhouette to cut out the designs on black vinyl. Since we are talking about DIY projects here is another really fun one that I did for my Halloween decor. No equipment needed for this one! It’s a DIY Halloween creeper planter-you can find my full tutorial on this easy project by CLICKING HERE. This Halloween planter is an easy way to add some creepiness to your Halloween decor. You could even modify it to be a dining center piece by using a bowl instead of a planter.
